Karate has become a popular form of self-defense and the workout of preference for many health-minded individuals. The recent proliferation of schools across the country has been staggering, the sheer numbers make it difficult for a prospective student to choose the school that suits his or her needs. Gene Dunn's Shotokan Karate Dojo is unique in many ways, and this section is designed to set those unique qualities forth in order to aid you in deciding if this school is right for you.

All of our trainers are skilled professional and amateur trainers with over 30 years of fight experience. All clients will 4receive carefully supervised instruction.
In the past, you would mostly find only professional fighters training in a boxing gym; but that landscape has changed dramatically. Nowadays you are likely to also find fitness enthusiasts in a boxing gym, and not only men. Women, more and more, are enjoying the great conditioning benefits that boxing affords them. Children are also welcome to train. |

All of our programs are based on a professional boxer's training regimen, with some modifications. These are not aerobic or circuit boxing classes. Our philosophy is that in order to get the full benefits of boxing, your training should reflect that of a professional fighter. This does not mean you will be drinking raw eggs and hitting sides of beef. It does mean that we hold you to the same standards we do a professional fighter. When you train, train to win.

Kyoshi Paul Sookdar, a Fifth-Degree Black Belt and co-founder of the Kenshikai Karate Association, has been studying martial arts for over thirty years and teaching for over twenty. He began training at the age of six at Jerome Mackie’s school in New York City, and after two years moved to the Kyokushin school of Kaicho (Grandmaster) Tadashi Nakamura at 14th Street in Manhattan. Here, he first found his love of traditional Japanese style karate based upon the principles of discipline, self-respect, and courtesy.

More importantly though, we are The Keeper of Karate's Highest Tradition, the preserver of the soul and spirit of the art of karate in line with the tradition of Bushido (the way of the samurai). Our mission is to promote the way of karate throughout the world, while ensuring that it remains true to the philosophical precepts upon which it was founded. This has been the mission of Japan Karate Association since its establishment in 1949.
