Tae Kwon Do is considered to be the most effective fighting art ever developed. It is a physical science, where each move carries maximum power, speed, accuracy and balance. Literally translated from Korean, Tae means “foot” or “to strike with the foot,” Kwon means “fist” or “to strike with the hand,” and Do means “discipline” or “art.” Therefore, taken together Tae Kwon Do means “foot, fist, art” or “the art of kicking and punching.” Modern Tae Kwon Do is a unique form of martial arts that combines the flowing movements of numerous Chinese styles with the quick movements of various Japanese systems.

Capoeira Angola, an ancient martial art of African origin, is one of the many cultural weapons used to break the chains of enslavement in Brazil. Played close to the ground, Capoeira Angola combines fluid, dance-like movements with kicks, head butts, tripping sweeps and the appearance of playfulness or vulnerability. Music is played on traditional instruments to accompany the players, to teach the rhythmic heart of the art, and also to mask its power. In the eyes of the enslavers it appeared to be a joking and playful acrobatic dance, but eventually its power was realized and Capoeira was outlawed. Death was the penalty paid by those caught playing Capoeira during the slavery era. For almost 400 years Capoeira Angola was taught and practiced in secret, and only in the 1930's did this African martial art become legal to teach and practice.

The man most responsible for the systemization of Karate as we know
it today was Gichin Funakoshi. He was born in Shuri, Okinawa in 1886.
When he was only a boy of 11, he began to study (then known as
"Okinawa-te") under the top two masters of the art at the time. Azato
and Itosu. In time, he became a Karate expert in his own right. He is
credited with being the first man to introduce Karate to Japan proper,
when he gave expositions sponsored by the Ministry of Education. The
art soon caught on in Japan, and Funakoshi traveled throughout the
country giving lectures and demonstrations. The main universities
invited him to help them set up Karate teams, and hundreds of persons
studies the art under his guidance. In 1957, Master Funakoshi, the
father of modern Karate, passed away at the advanced age of 89,
leaving thousands of students to carry his spirit. In Karate, Funakoshi
was also a poet under his pen name "Shoto:, meaning "Pine trees in
the sand" The style of karate which is taught then became known as
"Shotokan Karate".

Karate, the weaponless techniques of fighting and self-defense had its early beginnings in Okinawa. Okinawa being the main land of the Ryuku Islands chain, stretching from Japan to Taiwan, (about 300 miles from mainland Japan). There is evidence of Karate recorded in Okinawan history dating back more than 1000 years. However, the ancient history of Karate in different locations such as Naha, Tomari and Shuri later led to the different styles. Our style of Karate, Shima Ha Shorin Ryu, was developed from the ancient Tomari-Te and Shuri-Te. Goju-Ryu evolved from what was known as Naha-Te, the founder being Chojin Miyagi.

"On a mission to take Martial Arts training to a higher level -- a level where Martial Arts training is not only about kicking and punching, but about changing lives for the better.
Our mission will be fulfilled by creating a team of Certified Instructors of the highest quality. A team that is committed to helping all members of UMAC to reach their fullest potential. A team of Instructors that understands the word, “Instructor”, is equivalent to the word “selflessness”. We believe that if every student were to share the great benefits that Martial Arts had brought to him or her, eventually, everyone in our society would live the Martial Way. And that is a way of life based on the principals of Tae Kwon Do: Self-Control, Indomitable Spirit, Perseverance, Humility, and Courtesy." |
